Five Educational Posters: Color Theory and Armocromia

As educational material for the study of color, chromatics, and armocromia, we offer a set of five educational posters that graphically illustrate the main concepts of color theory.

Poster No. 1: Itten's Color Wheel, Color Properties

Itten's color wheel, color properties

The poster illustrates the following key concepts of color theory:

  • The Color Wheel with primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
  • Color Properties: hue, lightness, saturation, temperature, and contrast.
  • Classification of colors into warm, cool, and transitional.
  • Integration of achromatic colors and their variants.

Poster No. 2: Color Schemes

color schemes, color combinations

Shows six main color combination schemes:

  • Analogous: Colors close to each other on the color wheel, creating harmony.
  • Complementary: Opposite colors on the wheel, providing strong contrast.
  • Split Complementary: A variant of complementary with two adjacent colors to the complement.
  • Triadic: Three equidistant colors on the color wheel, balanced and vibrant.
  • Tetradic Rectangle: Two pairs of complementary colors arranged in a rectangle, rich and versatile.
  • Tetradic Square: Four equidistant colors creating dynamic balance.

Poster No. 3: Fundamentals of Color Theory

fundamentals of color theory

Explains the fundamental concepts of color theory:

  • Primary Colors: red, yellow, and blue.
  • Secondary Colors: obtained by mixing two primary colors.
  • Tertiary Colors: derived by combining a primary and a secondary color.
  • Color Temperature: division into warm and cool colors, with some considered transitional.
  • Tint, Tone, and Shade:
    • Tint: color + white.
    • Tone: color + gray.
    • Shade: color + black.
  • Hue: quality that gives a color its name.

This poster explains the basics of coloristics: primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, the concept of color temperature (warm, cool), and definitions of hue, tint, tone, and shade.

Poster No. 4: RGB and CMYK Color Models

RGB and CMYK color models

Describes the two main color models:

  • RGB (Red, Green, Blue):
    • Additive model: color is created by adding red, green, and blue components.
    • White is achieved with R = 255, G = 255, B = 255.
    • Black is achieved with R = 0, G = 0, B = 0.
  • CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black):
    • Subtractive model: primarily used in printing devices.
    • White is achieved with C = 0, M = 0, Y = 0, K = 0.
    • Black is achieved with K = 100.
  • Comparison between different gamuts: shows the range of colors produced by different models.

Poster No. 5: Armocromia and the Four Seasons Theory

infographic on armocromia and the four seasons theory

Features an infographic on armocromia and the four seasons theory. It explains how the temperature and contrast of facial colors (skin, eyes, hair) determine a person’s suitable color palette. Each season (winter, spring, summer, autumn) has specific subgroups, each with examples of color palettes. The characteristics of each subgroup (warm, cool, light, soft, etc.) are illustrated.

Additionally, this poster presents the color palettes that harmonize with each color group (for pure types).

Note: The names of the subgroups in the Four Seasons Theory may vary depending on the sources, based on the specific characteristics of each subgroup and the preferences of individual image consultants.

The map of color types presented here can also be used outside the context of the Seasons Theory. For example, when discussing the Winter Soft subtype, we can say: "A cool color type with slightly above-average contrast." This approach helps to avoid terminological confusion and offers a clear (verbal) method for describing a person's color type.
