Color Combination Viewer: Technical Specifications

The color combinator (or color combination viewer) is a palette of color cards, fanned out on a metal ring.

  • Number of color cards: 39 (36 colored + 3 monochromatic)
  • Dimensions: 50 mm x 110 mm
  • The color cards are numbered, with color names written on them
  • Shade names in English and Italian
  • Material: thick paper (200 g/m²)
  • Metal ring, openable

36 of the color cards feature the colors of the classic Itten color wheel: 12 primary + shades (12 light and 12 dark).

Additionally, there are two cards with shades of gray, known as the "saturation scale," and one white card to visualize various color combinations with white.

How to Use the Color Combinator with the Color Wheel

Suppose you already have Itten's color wheel and understand how it works. In that case, you know that when you have a color scheme on the wheel, you need to activate your imagination to visualize how those colors combine with each other without the presence of the adjacent colors.

The product presented on this page allows you to directly visualize the selected color scheme on the wheel. You’ll agree that this is much more convenient than mentally imagining the combinations!

visualization of the analogous scheme of the color wheel using the color combinator

In the example above, the combinator clearly shows the analogous scheme combination with the main color blue-green, while the color wheel simultaneously displays all the color schemes. For a more complete view, the three main colors are complemented by their light and dark tones.

However, the combinator alone will not tell you which tones to match precisely. It only works in tandem with the color wheel. Therefore, we recommend complementing your color wheel with this color scheme viewer or purchasing the color wheel and combinator set if you are a beginner in this field (stylist, designer, artist, etc.) and do not yet have either.

You can also select combinations randomly. But, as practice shows, combinations created with the help of the color wheel are more successful, as they are based on a theoretical scientific foundation.
